Now That’s What We Call “A Coming Out Party”: VW debuts the 21st Century Beetle with three international events

On April 18, 2011, Volkswagen and MTV World Stage joined forces to unveil the 2012 VW Beetle with a series of exclusive musical events on three continents. One of the most anticipated reveals in automotive history also turned out to be one of the most entertaining parties in automotive history.

The festivities kicked off with an MTV Sound System celebration in Shanghai, China hosted by MTV VJs. That bash was soon followed by MTV World Stage events in Berlin, with a DJ set from Belgian duo 2manydjs, and New York City, where The Black Eyed Peas performed. The New York event was livestreamed on MTV Worldstage and highlights from all events were broadcast on MTV networks around the world, making the 2012 Beetle reveal the most widely distributed World Stage event to date.

Redesigned for only the second time in Volkswagen history, the 2012 Beetle is a modern interpretation of the iconic Beetle design. Its exterior reinterprets the silhouette of the famous Volkswagen Beetle, combining stylistic elements borrowed from the original coupled with the latest technology.

If you think the 2012 VW Beetle looks like the old Beetle, well, you’d be right: from Super Beetles to New Beetles and Ragster concepts, this newest version of the automotive icon is inspired by a 73-year history. But make no mistake: 2012 ushers in a Beetle full of today’s key automotive features and technology, from three engine choices to Keyless Entry, an available panoramic sunroof, Fender Premium Audio and more. So yes – the aggressive style, the retro lines and planted look will get your attention. But it’s the car that will make you want to drive. And drive.

Sporty. Dynamic. Bold. Since its debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, those have been just a few of the words used to describe the newly redesigned 2012 VW Beetle. Arriving here, however, at this new interpretation of a classic icon, is a story about drawing inspiration from the original Beetle and translating its unique style in a modern way. To do that, Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff and team eschewed the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), gave the car a lower profile, a longer hood and a steeper front windshield. They also stretched the Beetle 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer, creating a more sporting, powerful appearance.

Another key to the design of the new 2012 VW Beetle is the rear spoiler, integrated into the design of the car with a black top and a body color under side. What that spoiler also hints at is the Beetle’s performance: the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine, pictured here, will be offered with a DSG 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. At 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, the turbo will be the sportiest Beetle offered – though you’d be hard pressed to say no to the 2012 VW Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, thanks to 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. The TDI Clean Diesel Beetle offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined. Also available is the 2.5L five cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.

A quick glance at the styling of the back of the 2012 VW Beetle reveals its connection to Beetle heritage. This is, however, unmistakably a Beetle for today with dual exhaust, 19-inch wheels and available features such as a panoramic roof, keyless entry and personalization options such as colors, wraps and an annual theme model.

Inside, Beetle heritage cues continue with available painted or carbon-look dashboards, an additional glove box integrated into the dash and optional gauges (oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge) located above the entertainment system. There’s also a split-folding rear seat.

Driving this newest Beetle is a decidedly modern experience, and one designed for drivers, from its engine choices and available 19-inch wheels to details such as an instrument panel arranged directly in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) that provides all key information at a glance. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line. Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Key premium features available on the 2012 VW Beetle include the Fender Premium Audio System, which adds an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power along with proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology that covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers and front dual voice coil speakers. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.

The 2012 Golf R. It’s coming. Fast.

The Black Beetle Reveals It All: Watch the groundbreaking commercial again—for the first time

When the Black Beetle commercial first aired during the Super Bowl in February, it caused quite a stir. After all, the silhouette at the end of the spot hinted at only the second Beetle redesign in Volkswagen history. The commercial, which showcases a black beetle outrunning and outperforming everything in its path, has been reedited with one major change: the silhouette has now been replaced with an image of the all-new Beetle.

Raising Money to Help the Funny: VW Donates a 21st Century Beetle for the American Comedy Fund

As the old saying goes, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; cry, and you cry alone,” but with a little help from Volkswagen and the 2012 Beetle, The American Comedy Fund would like to change that.

The American Comedy Fund was established by MTV Networks and Comedy Central as the first-ever charitable fund dedicated exclusively to providing social services and emergency assistance to comedic performers in times of need.

Volkswagen is donating a 2012 Beetle to The American Comedy Fund. The all-new Beetle, which boasts a sleek new look, increased horsepower, new engine offerings and a higher fun-to-driving ratio, will be auctioned off on eBay Motors with all proceeds benefitting The American Comedy Fund.

Comedy Central is honoring comedy’s brightest stars in the Comedy Awards. The event airs Sunday April 10, 2011 on Comedy Central with simulcasts on Spike TV, CMT, LOGO, Nick at Nite, TV Land and VH1. ‘Crazy restless’ couple drives a Beetle around the world.

Raise your hand if you’d willingly drive a 44-year-old car across the world.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Well, that’s exactly what Orange County vintage car enthusiasts Ed (76) and Janet (65) Howle plan to do. As part of a recreation of the 1908 World Race, the Howles will drive their 1967 Volkswagen Beetle from New York City to San Francisco, then across China, Russia and Europe. How cool is that? We imagine if the car in our opening sentence was a vintage VW, we’d probably see a lot more hand raisers.

Technically, the 14,000-mile road trip is a rally, in which “drivers and cars have to reach a series of predetermined destinations at specific times,” writes Thomas Goldsmith in a recent News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.) article.

The pair has always been adventurous, home-schooling their youngest children while sailing the Caribbean and authoring a suspense thriller based on the terminated 2008 World Race.

“It beats a retirement community,” said Ed.

The 15 or so teams participating in the rally will embark from New York next month and travel across America, China, Kazakhstan and Eastern Europe, finally ending at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The journey will take more than three months.

“Make your life the adventure you want it to be,” added Janet.

We’ll keep our eye on the Howles and hope to report a fast and fun finish by the happy couple soon enough.

The VW Beetle: Peace, love and smoking tires.

You know what people tend to forget? Herbie may have been called a love bug, but the evidence tells us the Beetle truly loved the thrill of the race.

In fact, between DIY versions and special editions, no one really knows just how many performance-oriented Beetles are out there. Our research tells us that one of the first came in 1964, when Belgian-based D’leteren updated 29 1200cc Beetles with Oettinger Okrasa-tuned 1300/34 TSV engines. Named the Mach 1, these twin-carbed beauties produced 50 horsepower and used a Transporter-supplied clutch to handle the extra ponies. If you’re in the market for one of the rarest Beetles in existence, make sure you remember they were exclusively available in Ruby Red or Java Green with optional center racing stripe. Except no substitutes.

Not long after our Belgian friends gave us the Mach 1, VW-tuning started to get popular here in the States. A gentleman by the name of Joe Vittone, out of Riverside, California, owned both an EMPI accessories company and a VW/Porsche dealership in 1966. He’s one of the earliest dealers to offer staged performance upgrades at the point of sale that were still covered by the Volkswagen warranty. And while many of the upgrades were purely cosmetic, by stage 4, you could drive your Beetle home with a ram-induction carb kit and sport-oriented shocks, among other goodies. Known as the EMPI GTVs, or “sports cars in a box,” these beasts were one of the earliest examples of straight-from-the-factory customizable vehicles in the U.S. And here’s another fun fact: EMPI built at least one of the Beetles used in the filming of 1969’s “The Love Bug,” Herbie’s first appearance on film.

For all the Herbie enthusiasts out there, the film’s racing sequences included a Herbie fitted with a Porsche 356 Super 90 engine, on top of the appropriate suspension and braking upgrades. It’s no surprise that reported racing speeds for that monster were upwards of 115 mph. The producers of the film may not have been the first to shoehorn a Porsche engine into a Beetle, but they certainly helped to popularize the notion. No doubt, plenty of early pony and muscle cars that found themselves smoked off the line by a “cute” Beetle in a heads-up drag race in those days owed Herbie for a great deal of their frustration. Those Beetles were the prototype sleepers.

We could go on for pages about the various fan and factory-tuned Beetles and performance variants that have graced U.S. streets since the 60’s, but you get the point. Are they cute? Indisputably. Are they slow? Find out for yourself. You’ll be surprised. Now imagine what we’ve got in store for the 2012 VW Beetle later this year. When it throws your head back in your seat as you bang through the gears, you’ll know one thing’s for sure: this ain’t your kid sister’s Beetle.

Comeback of an Automotive Free Spirit: World Debut of New Bulli by Volkswagen in Geneva

New compact van concept has pure electric drive

Wolfsburg / Geneva, March 1, 2011 — The Volkswagen bus, like no other car, stands for the spirit of freedom. It debuted over 60 years ago in 1950 with a contagiously simple design. Its internal Volkswagen code name was T1 for Transporter 1. The Germans called it the Bulli, and to Americans it was the Microbus. It was driven on all continents. And the world’s first van is still appreciated by a fan base which spans the globe. Now Volkswagen is reinterpreting the compact original form of this automotive legend and sending it into the future – in the form of a concept vehicle for a new generation Bulli! It is spacious like it was in 1950, it is as inspirational as ever, and it has clean styling like never before.

In this vehicle, Volkswagen is finishing what it started in 2001: ten years ago, the vision of a new Bulli led to an unforgettable concept vehicle known as the Microbus. But some visions need to mature before they yield something new. Now, the time is right for this vision. That is because the concept was sharpened, and the necessary, sustainable technologies are now at hand. More compact and affordable than the earlier concept vehicle, it is now being shown in Geneva. The new Bulli – powered by an electric motor and fitted with six seats and infotainment control via iPad.

This concept has the potential to establish a new, fifth brand of people carrier next to the Caddy, Touran, Sharan and its large counterpart – the Caravelle. The Bulli could even become an icon like the T1 Samba that still trades at extremely high prices today – one of those few vehicles that simply do not fade with time.

Zero emissions – up to 186.4 miles on a single battery charge

Thanks to highly advanced drive technologies, the Bulli being shown in Geneva is what is referred to as a ‘zero emissions vehicle,’ because the concept is electrically powered. Zero emissions at the tailpipe. The Bulli’s electric motor outputs 85 kW of power and an impressive 199 lb.-ft of torque. As is usual with this type of drive, its maximum forces are generated from standstill. The silent motor is supplied with energy from a lithium-ion battery with a maximum storage capacity of 40 kWh. This electrifying combination enables driving ranges of up to 186.4 miles – a high value for an electric car. When the Bulli’s battery is charged at an “electric refuelling station” specially designed for electric vehicles, the charging process takes less than one hour.

The new Bulli accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds, and its top speed is 87 mph (electronically limited). Its range and driving performance not only make the compact vehicle ideal for short distances; but also ideal for most commuters and recreational activities with zero tailpipe emissions.

Naturally, the concept can also incorporate Volkswagen’s extremely efficient gas and diesel direct injection engines as alternative drives. Engines with 1.0 or 1.4 liter displacement that are fuel efficient yet strong; this is downsizing by the book. Ideal for anyone who wants to cover maximum distances with minimal fuel consumption.

Bulli – the idea goes back 64 years

Without the Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon, the T1 might not have existed, and of course neither would the Bulli concept vehicle at Geneva. That is because Pon was the person who on April 23, 1947, sketched a picture of a compact bus in his notebook. Actually, the Dutchman’s drawing was a simple side view of a radically shortened public omnibus placed over the wheelbase of a Beetle with an “m” for “motor” written on it. That was it. The world’s first van was born. Great ideas usually just take a few strokes of the pen, but then they require a dedicated effort to implement them. Volkswagen designers took this sketch and created the bus that became an automotive icon with the characteristic “V” in front.

The Bulli concept vehicle now follows in the footsteps of the original bus and demonstrates the concept of maximum space utilisation with the characteristic “V” with VW logo at the front end and the cleanest of proportions. In the process, the concept vehicle’s design follows the maxims of the new Volkswagen “design DNA.” Retro? Hardly. It is a Volkswagen! The team led by Walter de Silva, Head of Volkswagen Group Design, and Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of the Volkswagen brand, developed the “design DNA” for the modern era based on styling principles of the bestselling Beetle, Golf I and T1.

Design – visual world of a masterpiece

The new edition of the Bulli is 156 inches long, 68.4 inches wide and 66 inches tall. The T1 was somewhat longer and taller, but narrower. With a wheelbase of 102 inches, the Bulli utilizes the overall length very well. Also striking here are the Bulli’s relatively large track widths (54 inches front and rear) in relation to body width.

Front end: Like the Samba bus before it, the Bulli being presented in Geneva also has two-tone paint – in this case white and red. The “V” on the bonnet, is kept white. The bonnet does house the engine: instead of rear-wheel drive with a boxer engine, as on the Samba, the Bulli has an electric motor located forward of the front axle and front-wheel drive. Here, it is a compact integral drive whose primary components are an E-motor, high-voltage pulse inverter and DC/DC converter for the 12-Volt electrical system.

In keeping with the Volkswagen design DNA, there is a horizontal layout of the narrow dual headlights with L-shaped LED daytime running lights and turn indicators implemented as LEDs arranged in an inverted L shape at each outer corner. Incidentally, LEDs not only exhibit tremendous luminous power and long life; due to their low energy consumption, they are ideal for the electrically powered Bulli of 2011. Located between the headlights in the bonnet is, as always, the VW logo. On the level beneath, one finds – once again arranged in a horizontal line – the air intakes for the passenger compartment and for battery cooling or for cooling the alternative conventional drives.

Finally, the bumper that is seamlessly integrated in the front end completes the design. Laterally, it exhibits a large round fog light on each side, another air intake in the middle, and a front spoiler in black below. This line matches the lines of the side sills.

Side profile: The Bulli’s two-tone paint also distinguishes the sides. Treated in white is the entire area above what is known as the character line. Originating in the wings is a white stripe that runs to the distinctive D-pillars; above them, the entire roof section is painted in this color. The continuous line of windows creates an especially striking contrast between the white sections. Here, the visually slender black pillars executed in the style of the 2001 Microbus concept are visually striking. Painted in red are the door mirror housings protruding from the line of windows.

Beneath the character line is the red body area. Design elements such as the distinctive wheel housings, the additional shape modulation in the door surfaces above the side sills and the headlights that wrap around to the sides with minimal seams are details that would not have been possible to manufacture in this form and precision on a T1. Concealed in the sandwiched floor behind the sills is the 1,450 kg Bulli’s lithium-ion battery. The white door handles are practical, opening in the direction of pull. The 18-inch alloy wheels are especially attractive. At their centers are stylized chrome hubcaps – another tribute to the bus of years past. Shorter than ever are the overhangs at the front and rear.

Rear section: The Volkswagen design DNA with its horizontal lines also dominates the rear of the new Bulli. Viewed from the bottom upwards, above the body-colored bumper (including black, stylized diffuser), there is the tailgate that extends across the entire width of the vehicle. In the tailgate, the narrow LED rear lights continue a theme from the Microbus concept of 2001. At the center, but smaller than at the front end: the VW symbol. When all six seating locations are fully occupied, there is a 370-liter bootspace behind the tailgate.

Interior space – melding of car and iPad

Like the body design, the interior is also marked by a level of clarity whose consistent application can only be found at Volkswagen. The passenger compartment – immersed in light during the day thanks to its panoramic sunroof – also harbors some surprises.

A practical highlight: like the T1 in times past, thanks to its level floor, the new Bulli is also equipped with a single bench seat in front. The van offers space for three in the rear as well.

An infotainment highlight: a removable iPad in the center console serves as a multifunctional touchscreen. Along with Internet-based iPad applications and the media center, it also handles control of such functions as Bluetooth hands-free telephone and a navigation system. Integrated right on the iPad mount are controls for the climate control system and the centrally-located hazard warning switch.

Typical Volkswagen: all cockpit details are clearly organized and designed to be intuitive. Running laterally across the entire width is a line with air vents. In front of the driver, there is a speedometer in the shape of a semicircle. A color multifunction display, also semi-circular in shape, can be used to view and control (via multifunctional keys in the steering wheel and on it) the navigation system, telephone, trip computer and media center – the entire unit of speedometer and multifunction display also communicates with the iPad. The key word here is sound: a system produced by legendary guitar and amplifier manufacturer Fender (USA) ensures that the music sounds as though it were being performed live. At Woodstock in 1969, Jimi Hendrix played “The Star-Spangled Banner” on a Fender Stratocaster guitar.

What is not found in the Bulli is a tachometer (unnecessary with an electric motor) or a conventional gear shift or gear selection lever (also unnecessary with an electric motor). The latter is replaced by a rotary switch to the right of the driver, which is used to activate forward and reverse gears. A push button in the same switch is used to start and stop the motor. Another rotary switch to the left of the driver is used to control the lighting functions.

Seats become reclining surface in an instant

The outer and middle seat positions of the front bench seat can be folded down (2/3 split); the rear beach seat, meanwhile, can be completely stowed. When the rear bench seat is stowed, cargo capacity increases to 1,600 liters. In addition – and here the new Bulli is reminiscent of its legendary ancestor – the seat system can be transformed into a large reclining surface with just a few manual movements. This turns the compact MPV into a compact camper – the ultimate companion for a weekend trip.

At least as important for many users, however, is that the seating system should not only be versatile but also offer maximum comfort. The seat position is comfortably high and is equally relaxing. As an added benefit, it offers an optimized view forward as well. And that is how it was in the T1 too. Contributing to peace of mind aboard today’s vehicle is the fact that the new era Bulli is equipped with all conceivable safety features. And that is the crucial difference: the car has essentially been reinvented since the days of the first T1 aka the Bulli aka the Microbus.

Only Oprah could give away cars that don’t even exist yet.

Many of you may know that the current VW Beetle is one of Oprah’s favorite things. But did she get mad about the upcoming end to its reign? No. She did what Oprah would do. She gave her entire audience keys to its successor: the yet-to-be-released, more aggressive 2012 VW Beetle.

Everybody and their grandma has a Beetle story. It’s a living icon. So the next chapter in its redesign is no simple task. And the designers at VW didn’t make it easy on themselves, choosing to evolve the vehicle into a true German-engineered performance driving machine. The 2012 VW Beetle sheds its “cute” look in favor of a more aggressive stance, a beefed-up engine and sleeker lines. Not to mention it sports modern driving technologies like Bluetooth, touchscreen radio, a Fender™ Premium Audio System, navigation and unique ambient lighting to provide a heightened driving experience.

And since the actual image of this new, high-performance Volkswagen Beetle is still under lock and key, the audience had to make due with its decidedly sportier silhouette and an IOU. Judging by crowd reaction (think: a pack of dogs), they didn’t seem to mind.

The Beetle is not just another car.
No sir: the Beetle – old, new or otherwise is a cultural icon, a creator of strange rock star rumors, a maker of film history and a racing champion on the track and in the sand. It’s our first car, our fathers’ first car, our grandfather’s first car, and, soon, it will be our next car. So to start the celebration, we thought we’d take a look at a few of the miles we’ve traveled since 1949, when the Beetle was new to America and so, for that matter, were we.

The 2012 VW Beetle
We’re not spilling the beans. Except to say that some folks out there feel that the 2012 VW Beetle will take styling hints from our Ragster concept (Autoblog says that). We’ll let the people decide when they see it. Otherwise, it’s true that the Beetle is based on the Golf VI platform and that powertrains will be shared accordingly. We can also confirm that the Beetle will feature technologies like Bluetooth®, a Fender™ Premium Audio System, 19-inch wheels and dual exhaust.

Say Hello, and Goodbye to the New Beetle – the 00s

2010: Final Edition Coupe and Convertible, along with the Red Rock, close out the New Beetle.
2006: The New Beetle receives a slight redesign, and the 2.5L 5-cylinder engine replaces the 2.0L and 1.8T powerplants
2004: A New Beetle TDI becomes the first production Volkswagen model to be paired to the DSG transmission
2003: The much-anticipated New Beetle Convertible goes on sale
2003: The final air-cooled Beetle, “La Ultima Edición,” rolls off the production line in Puebla, Mexico on July 31st
2002: Turbo S debuts, along with a 6-speed manual, a 180-hp 1.8T engine, special wheels, interior, and more for performance-oriented Beetle fans

You want sporty? Try the Dune Concept, introduced at the 2000 Los Angeles Auto Show. An all-wheel drive sports Beetle designed for Baja-style racing and playing, the Dune had a 2.3-liter five-cylinder engine and a variable roof that changed with light and heat – and also went up and down. With 18-inch alloy wheels, the Dune sported a very aggressive stance.

Generally, the 00s featured a number of special editions (New Beetle Hot Wheels, anyone?). Perhaps most notable, however – and least known – is Mexico’s Ultima Edicion Beetle in 2003. This was truly the last Beetle (not New) built and sold. Only 3,000 were made, and they featured a choice of Aquarius Blue or Harvest Moon Beige exterior paint, a 1.6-liter engine, CD player with four speakers plus chrome bumpers, trim, hub caps and exterior mirrors. Of course, for the US, the last, last, really final edition Beetle was the New Beetle in 2010.

CONCEPT 1 and the 90s

1998: the New Beetle is officially launched in the U.S. and Canada
1994: the CONCEPT 1, designed by Volkswagen Group’s design center in Simi Valley, CA, is presented at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit

Those who were there say things got a little crazy at the Detroit Auto Show in 1994. People lined up to simply see the Concept that would become the replacement for the Beetle. They say there was even some line cutting, and even certain other automotive executives were spotted at the booth, checking out the VeeDub goods. All in all, it’s fair to say that the debut of the Concept 1 is now firmly enshrined among the greatest vehicle debuts ever. After all, it’s a Beetle, and some twenty years after the last Beetle had been built for America, it was back. Designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company’s Simi Valley, California design studio, the New Beetle actually hit the streets in 1998. And while the New Beetle was mechanically closer to the Golf as a part of the Volkswagen Group PQ34 platform, design-wise it was a clear relative to the Beetle – just look at those running boards, sloping headlamps and rounded roofline.

Super Beetle and the 70s-80s

1979: Final model year for the standard Beetle sedan and Super Beetle Convertible in the U.S., with the final one – a Triple White Edition Convertible – rolling off the line on January 10, 1980
1975: The final year for the Super Beetle, as the Golf GTI makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
1974: Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection is added to the Super Beetle to help comply with new U.S. pollution standards; it also improves the Beetle’s fuel economy to 33 mpg.
1972: 15,007,034th Beetle models are produced, surpassing the Ford Model T as the most-produced car of all time (a record currently held by the Toyota Corolla)
1971: Super Beetle is introduced, with such improvements as the first on-board diagnostics for VW, an optional semi-automatic transmission, and a more powerful 1600cc engine. McPherson struts replace torsion bar front suspension.

So – just how Super was the Super Beetle? Try fuel injection. And colors like “Marathon Metallic”, a limited edition “Bi-centennial Beetle Convertible” and super cool “waist” stripes. And if you think that putting matte paint on a car came around sometime during the nineties at the SEMA Auto Show, well, think again: the Super Beetle had matte black trim in the seventies. The engine was a standard 1600 with super cool black tip exhausts. It also came available with Recaro sport seats, a stereo radio and fog lamps.

Herbie and the 60s

1969: Disney’s “Herbie the Love Bug” debuts; 3 more Herbie films would follow in the next 11 years.
1968: Independent rear suspension replaces the dated “swing axle,” the front end gets more modern ball-joints instead of king-pins, and the wheel bolt pattern changes from the “wide-5” configuration to a four-lug setup.
1967: Beetle gets a 12-volt electrical system (previously 6-volt)
1966: Introduction of the “more” powerful “1300” engine
1960 or 61: Beetle gets a gas gauge!

Despite key improvements such as a more powerful engine and an independent rear suspension, the sixties were cultural. First there was an unexpected cameo on the album of “that band by a similar name,” and of course there was Herbie the Love Bug. But first, the band: a 1968 Lotus White Beetle is seen on the cover of their 1969 album as the band walks the crosswalk. The Lotus White was eventually purchased by the owner of a music shop, who recognized the forgotten car at a dealership. It later made its way to VW.

As far as Herbie goes, here’s the thing: he was a race car. And he won. Always.

Early Days – 40s and 50s

1958: The rear window changes again – this time the rectangular window that carried through to the end of Type 1 production in 2003
1955: One millionth Beetle rolls off the assembly line in Wolfsburg (during this same year, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is established in Englewood Cliffs, NJ)
1953: First year for the “oval” rear window, which replaced the “split” window
1949: The first two Beetle models are imported and sold in the U.S.

In America, Volkswagen sold two 1949 Beetle models featuring a more powerful 1131 cc engine (making 25 horsepower) and a VW logo on the rims. And despite the slow start in the States, it was just six years later when the Beetle registered 1 million on the worldwide assembly line build-o-meter, VW in America was established and the Beetle began its climb to become the most popular car ever sold.

85mph+125miles per charge/$18,000=Sweet DIY electric Beetle

When you think of DIY, you probably think of arts and crafts, home improvements or remodeling. But one VW fan took DIY to the extreme by converting a gasoline-fueled Beetle to a fully electric car that has speed and range comparable to the newest electrics on the market.

For an $18,000 investment, this do it yourselfer’s 1970 Volkswagen Beetle is now a highway-capable electric car. The converted Beetle can reach 85 miles per hour and has a range of 75 to 125 miles. Pretty amazing given he spent a fraction of what a brand new electric vehicle will cost.

It might not have all the creature comforts of today’s high-end electrics, but it brings a style and panache that just can’t be replicated. It is, after all, a classic Beetle. What more do you want?

The 2012 VW Jetta GLI partners with Fender. The gods of rock smile.

Driving the all-new performance inspired 2012 VW Jetta GLI is definitely an experience, and the Fender Premium Audio System provides the soundtrack. It’s no small honor that Fender, arguably the most iconic name in audio, partnered exclusively with Volkswagen to make sure the new line up of VWs sound as good as they drive.

The GLI already prowls the streets with a rock star attitude. With its aggressive stance, 2.0-liter, 200hp turbocharged engine, interior sticking, honeycomb grill and flashy red caliper breaks the GLI is photogenic and it knows it. And with the addition of the Fender Premium Audio System the final piece of the puzzle is in place. This nine-speaker system is specifically designed to capture the raw emotion of a live performance, making it a “face-melting” audio experience. And according to Brian Tedeschi, Fender’s Business Affairs manager, that’s a technical term.

We had Danielle Gumro catch-up and rock-out (literally) at the Chicago Auto Show with the big brains at Fender to hear the inspiration and science behind the gut-busting sound. This state-of the-art sound system was the product of over three years of research and development to bring unmatched audio clarity at high and low volume to your driving experience. In laymen’s terms this means a lot of really smart people spent a really long time making sure that this audio system is going to be better, louder and generally more “face-melting” than anything you’ve heard before.

Yesterday the Jetta GLI rolled onto the stage at the Chicago Auto Show, but its first photos were shot months ago. So while you wait for updates from the big show, see all the Jetta GLI images here.

But before you dismiss these rock band-heavy shots as our attempt to look overly cool, (you know: picture of car next to super model, car next to waterfall, next to large hadron collider), you may want to keep this in mind:

The GLI will be the first model to feature a VW-exclusive Fender audio system. It’s a product of three years in a state-of-the-art sound lab, and, other than traveling with your own private band, it’s is as close as you get to a live performance. This particular GLI, however, seems to have both.

What you can’t see is what lies beneath the hood. The GLI is equipped with VW’s turbocharged, 2.0-Liter engine, and a host of autobahn-ready performance features. With track-tuned four-way Independent Performance Suspension, six-speed manual or optional DSG® transmission, and XDS® cross differential system, this GLI has more performance than the extended version of Freebird.

Some of you may have noticed that our all-new 2012 Volkswagen Passat has undergone some changes. One of the more obvious ones is that the new Passat is bigger. With that in mind, you may be inclined to ask some questions, such as, “Does bigger mean better?” or, “Why should I care?” or even, “What should I have for lunch today?” Well, we can’t help you with everything, but if you were to ask Kelsey Mays of Cars.com, you might find answers to some of those questions you’ve been asking.

Kelsey spent a few moments with the 2012 Passat at the NAIAS reveal in early January, even going so far as to write his article in the backseat with legs “comfortably extended.” What were some of the adjectives that jumped out at him about our new beauty? It will be built in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the world’s newest, most advanced and environmentally responsible auto assembly plant.

The new Passat, the largest ever, is the only midsize sedan that offers superior German engineering at an accessible price. The Passat TDI — the only clean diesel option in the segment — is expected to deliver 43 miles per gallon on the highway, with a range of approximately 800 miles.

Final pricing will be announced in the spring, but the Passat will start at around $20,000 when it arrives in dealer showrooms later this year. It will come with premium standard features that include automatic climate control and Bluetooth connectivity.

Engine and Transmission

The all-new Passat offers three drivetrain options: a responsive 2.5L gasoline engine, a remarkably eco-friendly 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel and a powerful 3.6L VR6.

The 2.5L five cylinder engine (170 hp/177 lb.-ft.), which is being offered in the Passat for the first time, will be mated to a standard 5 speed manual transmission. As an alternative, the 2.5 multi port injection engine may be paired with a 6-speed automatic.

The quiet, four cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel (140 hp/236 lb.-ft.) has the power of a six cylinder gasoline engine and the fuel economy of a hybrid. The Passat TDI is expected to deliver 43 miles per gallon on the highway, with a range of approximately 800 miles. Volkswagen’s TDI clean diesel engines, which come with a NOx storage catalytic converter, are among the cleanest engines in the world, fulfilling emissions requirements in all 50 states. Optional on the Passat TDI will be Volkswagen’s legendary 6-speed DSG transmission.

The 3.6 liter VR6 (280 hp/258 lb.-ft.) makes the new Passat a top-flight sport sedan. It offers power and luxury-class driving comfort, with European-type restraint in its fuel consumption — estimated at 28 mpg on the highway.

Gear shifting on the new Passat VR6 is handled by a standard 6-speed DSG; the dual-clutch transmission is considered the most efficient automatic in the world. This technologically advanced six-speed transmission incorporates an automatic dual-clutch system that instantly engages and disengages gears without the need for a clutch pedal. With a special computer controlling the process, one clutch is engaged on the next gear while the clutch from the previous gear is released. The results are crisp, quick shifts, without the loss of power that is experienced with a traditional manual gearbox.

Premium Features

The Passat will be offered in three trim levels, S SE and SEL, with a total of 16 equipment levels. All will offer first-in-class safety and comfort.

The Passat’s safety features include Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response Systems, which initiates automatic safety protections in a collision — the fuel supply and high consumption electronic equipment shuts off; the doors unlock; the battery terminal disconnects from the alternator cable; the hazard lights switch on.

The Passat also comes with a tire pressure monitoring system, ESP electronic stabilization program, ABS with braking assistant, Hill Climb Assist (with manual transmission), six airbags and an extremely rigid body structure to protect the driver and passengers.

The Passat sets new standards for comfort, with a significantly larger rear seating area, best-in-class rear seat legroom, well-designed controls and superior touring properties.

Other standard features include automatic climate control, power windows all around, air conditioning, insulating glass, a distinctive analog clock at the center of the instrument panel, cruise control, outside temperature display with frost warning, radio-CD system (MP3-capable, plus external audio input) and Bluetooth connectivity.

Premium options include 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels, power seat adjustment, leather, leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel, a touchscreen satellite radio, a choice of Volkswagen’s RNS 510 or RNS 315 navigation systems, front fog lights with static cornering lights, wood decor, new ambiance lighting, memory driver’s seat, power passenger seat, and keyless access with push button start.

The Passat will also offer the new Fender premium audio system, designed exclusively for Volkswagen. In a partnership that combined quality automotive engineering and quality sound engineering, Volkswagen and Fender teamed up to bring the raw emotion of live music to the driving experience.

Exterior

The Passat’s balanced proportions give it a unique, timeless and dominant styling reflecting the “design DNA” developed by Walter de Silva, the Italian design chief for the Volkswagen Group and Klaus Bischoff, the German design leader for the Volkswagen Brand. The signature clean design, with a predominance of horizontal body elements, reinforces the Passat’s position as the sophisticated choice in the midsize segment. The bottom line: this car looks much more expensive than it actually is.

The key identifying feature of a strong brand is the styling of its front end. Here the Passat displays the new horizontal brand face, with the grille and headlights forming a single unit. Unlike models in the compact class, the Passat’s grille is sculpted in a three-dimensional shape. Moreover, the grille stands more upright and makes a more distinctive and elegant impression in its stricter geometry.

From the side profile, the muscular ridge in the sill area creates a lively interplay of light reflections. Powerfully sculpted wheel arches emphasize the dynamic properties of the Passat. In the balance of the side profile, the roof lines flow toward the back with a nearly coupe-like cut of the rear window. Three side windows create luxury class style with a long, extended glass surface.

The rear section is also dominated by horizontal lines. The lines of the large taillights rise toward the sides, underscoring the dynamics of the elegant rear styling. Another unique feature here is the design of the two-part taillights (integrated in the rear fender and trunk lid).

Interior

The Passat shows the look of considerably more expensive cars. The new, larger Passat is 191.7 inches long and has a 110.4 inch wheelbase, which translates into a noticeable increase in rear seating space.

Like the exterior, the interior is also marked by a clean and geometric formal structure. Interior styling consistently follows the maxims of functionality. Controls are attractive and easy to operate.

The instrument panel is similar to that of Volkswagen’s flagship vehicle, the all-new Touareg. Chrome trimmed gauges surround a digital multifunction display. A high-end chrome look is also applied to the air vents in the cockpit, and to the surrounds of the radio, navigation system and the climate control panels. The rotary light switch and parking brake handle button are also treated in chrome. Except for the base version, all other Passat trims have chrome interior accents on the window, mirror adjustment and trunk opening switches.

The upper and lower instrument areas are visually distinguished by various decorative accents, depending on the equipment version. Decorative elements in “Titan” design are used in the S version; the elegant “Titan Silver Printed” decor is used in the SE version, wood décor “Autumn Nut Burl” is featured in the exclusive SEL version. The accents not only upgrade the instruments, but also the center console as well as the door trim panels.

The seats are exceptionally comfortable. Even in the base version, the driver’s seat is adjustable eight ways, including lumbar support.

The new Passat and the all-new Jetta are expected to be the sales leaders in Volkswagen’s plan to significantly increase market share in the United States. The rumor is that Volkwagen is working on a redesign of the next Passat. We'll have to wait till the Paris Auto Show in October 2010 but updates are to include new bodywork and an assortment of VW's upscale luxuries like backup cameras, active cruise control, navigation and intelligent lighting.

VW is working on revising their powerplants to include several hybrid and electric options to keep up with the latest automotive trends. That technology will not be ready for the 2011 Passat, instead it will get one of the many different engine configurations that VW offers. There are a number of gasoline and diesel engines, that employ some form of turbo or supercharger coupled with either a 1.2 and 2.0 liters displacement engine.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI beat nine other "best new" category winners, announced October 30, 2009 to win top honours. AJAC's Canadian Car of the Year Awards chair, Richard Russell, said: "AJAC has been conducting and perfecting the
